The Royal Project Tour Programs, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, Mae Hong SonThe Northernmost province of Thailand, Chiang Rai is situated on the Mae Kok River basin 416 meters above sea level. With an area of some 11,678 square kilometers, it’s about 182 kilometers from Chiang Mai or 785 kilometers from Bangkok. Mostly mountainous, it reaches the Mekong River to the north and borders on both Myanmar and Laos. Chiang Rai is also a tourism gateway into Myanmar and Laos.

Chiang Rai has captured the imagination of adventure travelers for her vast land of mountainous area where diverse ethnic people habitat. The hilltribes here have abandoned opium in favor of cold-climate fruit, vegetable and cut fl owers, and little plantations of these can be found in the most remote corners, since they are now accessible by road. A trip to these little planter communities offer a chance to explore both the agriculture and the ethnic diversity that has always been a major part of Chiang Rai’s charm.

On the way from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai, you will have chance to visit Huai Luek Royal Project and Ang Khang Royal Project on Doi Ang Khang, where you can visit both Royal Project with many interesting activities and tribal people.

Day 1
Chiang Mai – Royal Project – Doi Ang Khang

AM : Pick up from a hotel in Chiang Mai, travel to Mae Malai, the lively market to buy some food for lunch. Then visit to some interesting places such as Thai noodle making village, paper making village, Khao Larm (sticky rice in bamboo) making village, Chiang Dao Cave, and visit to the Huai Luek Royal Project, where Hmong Village is located. Here, you will have a good opportunity to taste herbal tea, and fresh salad. All products produced at the Royal Project are all chemical free, good for your health. After that proceed to Doi Ang Khang, visit the Royal Project’s research farms such as cool climate fruits & fl owers, bonsai, coffee, etc. The visits include tribal villages such as Lahu & Palong Overnight at Ang Khang Nature Resort.

Day 2
Doi Ang Khang – Thaton

AM : Breakfast. Proceed to visit “Jeen Hor”, the remnant Kokmintang, migrated from Yunnan, China since the Chinese revolution era. Then proceed to visit Fang Hotspring, local rice mill & brick making village (recycle from rice peel). On arrival in Thaton, visit to Wat Thaton, a small, but nice temple, and check in at Thaton River View Resort. At leisure. Overnight at Thaton River View Resort.

Day 3
Thaton – Boat Trip – Hilltribe Villages

AM : Travel to the pier and take the boat trip on Mae Kok River (about 2 - 3 hrs.) to Karen village and connected with elephant riding (about 1-2 hrs.) to visit Lahu village, and then trek into the jungle until reaching a nice waterfall (about 2 hrs.). Continue trekking to Akha village (about 45 minutes).

Dinner and overnight at homestay in Akha village.

Day 4
Akha Village – Mae Sai – Golden Triangle – Chiang Rai / Chiang Mai

AM : After breakfast, travel by van/ to Mae Sai (about 1 - 2 hrs. drive). Visit Mae Sai, the lively market at Thailand-Myanmar border. Then travel to visit the Golden Triangle and Chiang Saen with visits to some nice local temples & Opium Museum

PM : After lunch, return to Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai for departure. (It’s possible also to drop off at Chiang Khong for departure.

Hiking & Bird Watching at Doi Inthanon National Park / Lanna Thai Village Life in The Remote Mae Chaem Valley / Pre-Historic Site and Beautiful Gorge at Ob Luang National Park

Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest peak (2,565 m.) in Chiang Mai Province, is an offshoot in this southern extension of Himalayan Range. This national park’s vegetation consists of 8 types (a native pine, lower & upper dry dipterocarp, opened& moist hill evergreen, and sub - alpine etc.). It is a habitat of more than 446 kinds of wildlife particularly 364 kinds of wild birds and there are several famous trails to explore the wonder of nature. Doi Inthanon is therefore one of Thailand’s best places for a nature walk and bird watching activities. There are Karen & Hmong tribesmen dwell in isolated villages in this area where visitors can observe their unique lifestyle and culture.

Here is the place where the Royal Project was fi rstly founded. This Royal Project support both Hmong and Karen people located in Doi Inthanon. At present, Hmong and Karen people can have the “suffi cient economy” living in Doi Inthanon happily without doing the “slash and burn” plantation.

Drive downhill to the remote valley of Mae Chaem, the fascinating lifestyle of former Northern Thai Village still remain to be seen here. In village we have ample time to visit a local temple in Lanna Thai Style of art - observe home factory of hand woven clothes - beautiful paddy fi eld in a valley - and you may try a herb sauna, the local medicinal wisdom for your good health.

We will have a great time of hiking to visit the pre-historic site and beautiful landscape of rock - walled gorges along Mae Chaem River at Ob Luang National Park.

Day 1
Chiang Mai - Doi Inthanon National Park - Nature Walk - Hmong & Karen Hilltribes

08.00 a.m. Pick up from a hotel in Chiang Mai and travel by van/minibus to Doi Inthanon National Park (about 1.30 hrs.). Explore the summit, and visit to the visitor’s center. Nature walk at Ang Ka nature trail near the summit. Here you will see tall trees cloaked in moss, fern, orchid and other epiphytes, especially“Sphagnum Moss” and Rhododendron. Then go down to the King & Queen Stupas for lunch. After that hiking on Kiew Mae Pan nature trail for about 3 hrs.

04.00 p.m. Finish hiking, drive down to visit Hmong Fruits & Flowers Market (supported by Royal Project) before check-in at Karen Ecolodge in the Karen terrace rice fi eld. Take leisure or hike to visit Karen Mae Klang Luang Village (about a half an hour), meet & chat with Karen people who are happy to guide you to visit their fruit & coffee orchards including trout & cray fi sh raising farm supported by Inthanon Royal Project. You might like to taste the fresh coffee here made by Karen Hilltribes, sip the fresh coffee in a beautiful view surrounding is a real great privilege.

07.00 p.m. Dinner and overnight (in huts) at the Karen Ecolodge or Nature Lodge in the park.

Day 2
Doi Inthanon – Royal Project - Mae Chaem – Forest Cottage

08.00 a.m. Breakfast at the resort

09.00 a.m. Proceed to Mae Chaem District. Village tours: visit to some villages, well-known for hand woven clothes and local temples.

12.00 a.m. Lunch at a food shop, or homemade lunch in the village.

PM : Proceed to the Forest Cottage near Ob Luang. Check into the Forest Cottage, the beautiful resort, located on the beautiful landscape. At leisure.

Day 3
Forest Cottage - Ob Luang - Chiang Mai

08.00 a.m. Breakfast at the resort. Hike from the resort to visit the pre-historic rock painting site and a beautiful scenic gorge of Ob Luang.

12.00 a.m. Lunch at the food shop in the park

01.00 p.m. Return to Chiang Mai by van

03.00 p.m. Arrive Chiang Mai

Mae Hong Son, originally the isolated, mist-covered province, has become a wonderful place for those who love wandering off the beaten track. Hiking/traveling to visit local people and hilltribes from one village and one ethnic group to another is a once in a lifetime experience. There are many tribal ethnic groups living in Mae Hong Son such as Karen, Hmong, Lahu, Lisu, Lawa, etc. They share animist beliefs and honor numerous forest and guardian spirits. Each tribe has distinctive ceremonial attire, courtship rituals, games, dances, agricultural customs, dialects, aesthetic values and hygienic habits. Some of them have worked in the Royal Project with a great opportunity for “suffi cient economy” according to the Royal Project’s Policy.

Day 1
Chiang Mai – Mae Hong Son (By flight) – Mae La Noi

10.30 am. Pick-up at Mae Hong Son Airport (by fl ight TG. 192 from Chiang Mai). Meet and travel by van to visit to Wat Phra that Doi Kongmu and Wat Jongkam.

11.30 am. lunch at Fern Restuarant.

12.30 pm. Travel to Mae La Noi Royal Project via Ban Pa Bong. On the way short visits to Hotspring, Ban Khun Yuam’s World WarII Museum, Thung Bua Tong (only Nov.), Fruits and Flowers Market of Hmong & Lisu tribal people.

05.00 p.m. On arrival at the Royal Project. Check in at the Royal Tourist Center, located in Lawa village. Dinner and overnight at the Royal Project Center

Overnight : in Mae La Noi Royal Project Center

Day 2
Mae La Noi – Mae Sariang

07.30 am. Breakfast. Visit Royal Project at Ban Huai Hom, taste fresh coffee and help collect coffee from the coffee farm; see sheep raising and weaving, the only place in Thailand. Then visit Ban La-Oob, the ancient civilization area of Lawa ethnic people, and observe Lawa people produce silverware. After that travel to Mae Sariang with stop to visit the beautiful cave, “Kaeo Komol”.

Overnight : at The River View Resort in Mae Sariang
Meals : Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Day 3
Mae Sariang – Ob Luang - Chiang Mai

AM : Early morning, visit the lively morning market in Mae Sariang. Then breakfast. After breakfast depart for Chiang Mai with stop to visit the beautiful scenic Gorge of Ob Luang.

12.00 a.m. Lunch at the food shop in Ob Luang National Park before returning the township of Chiang Mai. On the way, visit Wat Phradhat Sri Chomthong, a nice temple with interesting story of the King of Chiang Mai. You can also chat with monk here for your own discovery of Buddhism.

03.30 pm. Arriving in Chiang Mai.

Program 1 : The Pang Soong Nature Trail and Royal Projects
Duration: A one day ecotourism excursion from Chiang Mai Degree of Diffi culty:
Medium (School groups do the walk) Meal: Picnic lunch. Location: One hour north
of Chiang Mai. Introduction:

07.00 a.m. Depart your hotel by vehicle, accompanied by an English speaking guide, and drive northeast from the city into the mountain that separate the Chiang Mai and Lampang valleys, a little visited area, home to the“Khun Muang” – the original farmers of the Chiang Mai valley. They have for years grow “Chaa Mieng”, a local variant of tea. Nowadays, with their offspring showing little liking for fermented tea and coffee prices relatively high, they are turning to farming “Arabica” coffee. On arrival at Pang Soong Lodge, you are served tea whilst being given a briefing on the trail, safety issues.

08.30 a.m. You set off along the trail and navigate your way along paths, steps cut into the side of the riverbank, through the river bed, over small waterfalls scaled by ladders, and assisted by hand rails where they are needed, as you climb from 1,000 to 1,450 m.a.s.l. identifying birds, trees and insect from the trail guide document you will be provided with. You take a picnic lunch at the base of the waterfall next to a pool big enough to swim in, and then return back down the trail to Pang Soong Lodge. The walk, at a leisurely pace should be a 3-4 hour round trip.

02.00 p.m. Walk from the lodge, back through the Khun Muang village of Ban Pang Mano – a window onto the Khun Muang lifestyle , before boarding the vehicle and heading off down to the valley fl oor.

03.00 p.m. Stop in and the take a guided tour of the Mae Tha Nier Centre, a Royal Project showcasing Dragon fruit, Arabica coffee, and more recently Vanilla.

04.00 p.m. Visit the nearby “Teen Tok Centre” a Royal Project specializing in the development of Arabica coffee.

05.00 p.m. Depart for the 30 minute drive back to the city and your hotel.

Accommodation at present basic but good standard student style available at the Pang Soong Lodge, outdoor Education & Research Center.

Program 2 : Doi Inthanon National Park and Royal Horticultural Project
Duration: One day ecotourism excursion from Chiang Mai Degree of Diffi culty: Medium (School groups do the walk) Meal: Picnic lunch Location: One hour north of Chiang Mai Introduction:

08.00 a.m. Depart Chiang Mai heading south on highway 108, before branching of at Chom Thong along route 1009 leading to the summit of Doi Inthanon.

Stop for a coffee break at the Mae Klang waterfall, a very popular and easily accessed scenic spot popular with Thai families.

Continue on for 10 kms until reaching the National Park Headquarters.

Doi Inthanon is Thailand’s highest mountain, named after Chiang Mai’s last ruler, Inthawuchayanon, and dominating a national park where tigers still roam.

The nature – loving ruler Inthawuchayanon was so enchanted by the mountainous region, just 80 kms from his Chiang Mai place, that he ordained his ashes to be buried on its 2,330 meters summit. A white chedi contains his remains at a spot called “the roof of Thailand.” The serpentine route to the top winds through two distinct climatic zones, from tropical jungle to deciduous oaks and evergreen fi rs.

In just 30 kms the average night-time temperature drops in winter from a pleasant 70 degrees to near freezing, and on one cold night the thermometer showed a record minus 8 Celsius. The park showcases spectacular waterfalls-including Thailand’s highest- are easily accessible, either on foot or by vehicle.

After collecting maps and brochures we continue on towards the summit.

12.00 a.m. Stop at the royal horticultural project for lunch.

The Siriphum falls feed trout-breeding tanks which are one the most successful enterprises of the National Park’s royal project. The trout raised here fi nd their way onto the menus of Thailand’s leading hotels and, of course, the royal palace. You can enjoy a grilled trout at the simple restaurant that welcomes visitors to the royal project. The trout dishes come in six varieties, including incongruously hot and spicy sauces. The horticultural garden and greenhouses that make up most of the royal project are a gardener’s dream.

02.00 p.m. Continue to the summit a future half-hour drive away, and stop to enjoy the views.

From the summit, return down the mountain by the same route and after two miles take a turning right onto highway 1192 to the textile village Mae Chaem.

The views of the Doi Inthanon massif and valley paddies and orchards are spectacular.

In Mae Chaem, visit one of the locate households where textiles are still created on ancient looms. From Mae Cham, return to Chiang Mai on highways 1192 and 108.

05.30 p.m. Arrive back in Chiang Mai, after a day tour in which the total driving time was about fi ve hours.

Accommodation is available in small cottages at the national park headquarters or in the local hilltribe villages if on extended 2 or 3 day treks along the park’s trails.

There are several excellent nature walk options in the area, including visits to waterfalls and to Karen hilltribe villages.
